Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUE): Competing Fairly, Competing Safely

At the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM), we are committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity and fairness in powerboating. Every athlete deserves a level playing field, but we also recognize that some riders and pilots may require essential medications or treatments to manage medical conditions.

This is where Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUEs) come in.

What is a TUE?

A TUE allows a pilot or rider to use a prohibited substance or method for medical reasons without facing an Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV). This ensures that athletes can receive the necessary treatment while competing fairly.

Each TUE application is carefully assessed by a panel of medical experts to determine whether the treatment is justified and does not enhance performance beyond an athlete’s normal state of health.

Who Can Apply for a TUE?

A pilot or rider may apply for a TUE if:

- They have a clear medical diagnosis requiring treatment with a prohibited substance or method

The substance will not enhance their performance beyond a normal healthy state.

There is no reasonable permitted alternative for treatment.

The need for the substance is not due to prior misuse of a prohibited substance or method.

How to Apply for a TUE

Applying for a TUE is a straightforward process:

Submit your application via ADAMS through your National Anti-Doping Organization (NADO).

Alternatively, download the UIM TUE Application Form from the UIM Anti-Doping webpage and submit it along with medical documentation to antidoping@uim.sport.

The UIM TUE Committee will carefully review your request.

Why It Matters

Every pilot and driever is responsible for what enters their body—even if prescribed by a doctor. Using a prohibited substance or method without a TUE could lead to serious sanctions. That’s why it’s crucial to check the Prohibited List before taking any medication.

If you have questions, your National Anti-Doping Organization (NADO) or the UIM Anti-Doping Department is here to help.

Stay informed. Stay compliant. Stay in the race.
