UIM’s Environmental care around its General Assembly in Shanghai

The 98th UIM General Assembly, held in Shanghai’s Baoshan District, China, featured impactful initiatives with a strong focus on environmental care and sustainability.

In one of them, UIM’s Green Partner, ALENS, calculated the carbon emissions generated by the General Assembly and the logistics involved in bringing the attending UIM Delegates to Shanghai. The parameters taken into account included the total number of participants, the countries from where they travelled to Shanghai, and the carbon impact of reusable and disposable materials used throughout the “Open Forum” on Saturday 11 and the General Assembly on Sunday 12 October.

This comprehensive assessment resulted in a carbon impact of 54 tonnes of CO2e, which has been fully offset by ALENS through a certified project registered on the Carbon Registry.

The offset contribution supports “The Anew – North Maine Woods Forestry Project”, located on 86,221 acres of Northern Hardwood and Northern Conifer forest in Maine’s North Woods, an area of more than 10 million acres of timberland, the majority of which is privately owned. The project area has a long history of commercial timber harvesting, and the landowner, Tree-Star Timberland, acquired this property as a timberland investment, with the objective of obtaining competitive returns through commercial forest management. Revenues from the carbon project will allow harvest levels to be reduced meaningfully below the thresholds allowed by the property’s current Forest Management Plan, as carbon payments supplant income that would otherwise be achieved through more intensive commercial timbering. The forest management activities under the carbon project will also foster habitat for rare and threatened species in the area, including the Canada Lynx and American Marten.

This initiative reflects the UIM’s increasing efforts to raise the level of sustainability and environmental responsibility in the powerboating sport. By accurately measuring and offsetting the carbon footprint of its events, the UIM reinforces its role as a responsible international sports federation, actively supporting environmental protection and the transition toward a more sustainable future for powerboat racing and beyond.
