The picturesque coastal town of Rodi Garganico in Puglia, Italy, witnessed an exhilarating weekend as it hosted the "UIM CLASS 3D WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP" on Sunday, July 14, 2024. Enthusiastic spectators gathered in large numbers, captivated by the skill and power on display as pilots maneuvered their high-speed catamaran hulls.
Out of ten fierce competitors, the crew of "D20 Blu Banca" emerged victorious in both Race 1 (Long Race) and Race 2 (Short Race). This formidable team comprised Serafino Barlesi, the renowned Roman champion from Circolo Canottieri Aniene, and his partner, Tomaso Polli from Monaco. Their performance was nothing short of spectacular.
The championship kicked off on Friday with challenging conditions—rough seas and strong winds. However, Barlesi and Polli showcased their prowess, securing the top spot ahead of Norwegian competitors Johansen Erik Sundbland and Magnussen Arild Brede on hull D55 Enigma 30, and the Norwegian duo Lasse Nikolaisen and Andre Strand on hull D54.
In stark contrast, Sunday brought calm seas and clear skies, setting the stage for an intense Race 2. Barlesi and Polli once again dominated, taking first place, followed by Sundbland and Magnussen Arild Brede, with the Italian team of Fabio Magnani and Mario Cosma on D88 "Hoses Technology" rounding out the podium.
Despite the excitement, the weekend saw its share of challenges. Two teams were forced to retire from the competition. Andrea and Lorenzo Bacchi's D10 encountered engine issues, causing them to withdraw from Race 1. Additionally, reigning 3D world champions, Francois Pinelli from France and Saul Bubacco from Venice, faced a dramatic capsize at the start of Race 1. Thankfully, the pilots were uninjured and swiftly rescued, though their hull suffered extensive damage, preventing them from continuing.
The "UIM CLASS 3D WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP" in Rodi Garganico was a testament to the thrilling sport of powerboat racing, leaving fans eagerly anticipating the next leg of the championship. Stay tuned for more updates and coverage on the Union Internationale Motonautique's official website.
